A visit from an Audiologist

We were lucky to welcome Nel to school to talk about her work as an audiologist.

We learnt how vibrations travel through the air to reach our ears, and how they move from the eardrum to the cochlea and then our brains. We also discovered we start to hear and learn about different sounds in the womb before we are even born

The sound meter measures in decibels (dB).

Whispering = 30dB

Talking = 50dB

Shouting = 90dB

Using the Otoscope we were able to look at each other’s eardrums.

Nel told us how she uses the otoscope in her work, and about the training she needed to do to become an audiologist.

Lily’s brother bravely volunteered to have a cast made of his ear. This is usually done to make sure hearing aids fit perfectly into their user’s ears.

We finished the afternoon with a raffle and fruit snack making it an interesting and exciting end to the week.
